THE HOUSE OF FRIENDS

Stunning design, light, spacious, with heavenly views, eclectic contents, peace and quiet. Welcome to Vinahus.

It was always an ambition to build my own eco house and finally I found the right place. Built on an old croft with the help of friends and completed in 2020, it’s everything I hoped it would be.

Vinahus has solar electricity and solar hot water with an air-source heat pump for heating (it’s underfloor). Any electricity I import is from renewable sources and there’s a wood-burning stove for the coldest days and nights. I’ve travelled widely for decades, and now I have a place for the beautiful, eclectic art and objects I’ve collected along the way.

I’ll give you all the advice and tips you want about local places to eat, drink, and explore – and just as much privacy and independence as suits you. Come and go whenever you want, stay in the house or garden as much or as little as you like.

Vinahaus is a few minutes drive from Armadale, where the ferries cross regularly, year-round, to Mallaig on the mainland, making it a great place to start or end a visit to Scotland’s second largest island. From my house you can see the beautiful string of silver-sand beaches between Mallaig and Arisaig, one of them made famous by the film Local Hero.

Heading north, Broadford – one of Skye’s larger settlements – is a 25 minute drive away, and the bridge to the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh is just half an hour’s drive from my home.

Waste Disposal

You can empty waste during your stay. As I have a septic tank you must use septic tank friendly/biological toilet additives eg Aqua Kem green sachets or Elsan Organic. Check on campa.org.uk if you are not sure what to use.
